In a heart-racing speech on 30 September 2008, then-US President Barack Obama pledged to ‘stead-on’ on new ‘insurance’ deals if the talks failed, but the talks never materialised. Instead, the talks ended in a ‘corrupt outcome’.
On 28 March 2008, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) ordered the US Department of Justice (DOJ) to stop blocking the US entry of Viagra to China, and halt enforcement of the ‘effective’ price of the drug. The erectile dysfunction drug has an estimated market value of $2.3bn (£1.7bn) a year, or about $1.5m per tablet. Pfizer’s share of the global market is at a combined value of $21.5bn (£15.5bn) in 2010, or about $1.6bn per tablet. Viagra is the world’s second most popular erectile dysfunction drug, behind Cialis and Cialis PDE5 inhibitors.
In 2012, Pfizer lost its exclusive patent for Viagra to Teva Pharmaceuticals LP (a joint venture between Teva and Pharmacia), and was given a ‘prospecting’ sale. The decision to delay the patent expiry for one year was then made, and Teva acquired rights to Viagra for $3.5bn in 2013.
